Portuguese resorts, cities and companies have received a total of 26 nominations for this year’s World Travel Awards, with the Europe Gala Ceremony being held at the brand new Conrad Algarve hotel in Quinta do Lago on 6 October, prior to its official opening. A source from International Marketing Portugal, a Lisbon-based sales and marketing company said, “Portugal is one of the top countries in Europe for tourism, and this really reflects that. Lisbon is currently the second most visited city in the whole of Europe, which shows just how important tourism is to our economy and culture.”
National airline TAP Portugal has been nominated for both Europe’s Leading Airline and Europe’s Leading Airline Business Class, with Lisbon being nominated for Europe’s Leading Airport.
The national tourist board ‘Turismo de Portugal’ has also been nominated for Europe’s Leading Tourist Board. Portugal’s Algarve region has a total of 10 nominations. These include; Dona Ana beach in Lagos being nominated for Europe’s Leading Beach Destination and Hotel Quinta da Bela Vista, Portugal and Vila Joya, Portugal which are both nominated for Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel. Vila Joya is also nominated in the separate category of Europe’s leading Boutique Resort.
Portugal’s capital city is also well represented in this year’s list, being nominated in four categories; Europe’s Leading City Break Destination, Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination, Europe’s Leading Cruise Port and Europe’s Leading Destination. “It’s really nice for the city to get such recognition,” said a source at International Marketing Portugal, “It really is such a beautiful destination for people looking to explore the culture and history, but also just a great place to relax for people who want to soak up the sun.”
Meanwhile, the island of Madeira also features heavily on the list, with Funchal’s Choupana Hills Resort being nominated for four awards including; Europe’s Leading Boutique Hotel, Europe’s Leading Boutique Resort and Europe’s Leading Green Hotel. It also shares nominations with Madeira’s Reid’s Palace for Europe’s Leading Island Resort. Madeira’s The Vine Hotel is nominated for Europe’s Leading Design Hotel while the Portugal & Pestana Porto Santo Beach Resort & Spa is also nominated for Europe’s Leading All Inclusive Resort.
The World Travel Awards are considered the ‘Oscars’ of tourism. “These are prestigious awards,” said our source at International Marketing Portugal, “They’re respected the world over. I’m holding out a lot of hope for Portugal to pick up those awards, as they’re really well deserved.”
